Supranational integration and crisis theory
This research develops a political-economy account of integration in which crises alter interdependence, bargaining conditions, and the demand for common institutions. It revisits neofunctional and postfunctionalist expectations by examining when pressure produces further integration, differentiated arrangements, or political blockage.
Across work on the euro crisis, the pandemic, fiscal capacity, legitimacy, identity, and politicisation, the contribution is to connect institutional change with the political coalitions that support or resist it. Formal arguments, comparative analysis, and public-opinion evidence are used together to explain why similar crises can generate different integration paths.
